hello there, this is all a bit new to me, but i thought what a good idea it would be to be able to share thoughts/fears with people in similar situations. i have been having problems with my periods for about 6 years now and each time i went to doctors i had no joy, kept telling me to change my pill or it was 'just one of those things' my partner and i have been trying for a baby for over 12 months now and in september last year i went to my doctor with my concerns about me conceiving and how my cycle was all over the place. at last a doctor who listened to me! he decided to run some blood tests and discovered i had an under active thyroid, the results showed i was ovulating but he told me my fertility could be affected because of the thyroid problem, however with medication of thyroxine things should start to improve. since then my partner and i have still been trying to conceive and in february i had another blood test to check my levels, i mentioned i was still concerned and he suggested my partner has a sperm test. i was very confident that all would be ok with him and there would be nothing to worry about, but sadly the results came back and he had a very low count and low motility so that combined with my thyroid problem the doctor said the chances of conceiving naturally would be possible..however the chances would be very slim. so we are now waiting for an appointment to see the fertility specialist. i'd be interested in any advice / support from anybody !

nikki1,

I know how your feeling. The same thing happened to me. My periods were regular but I just wasn't getting pregnant. They tested everything it seems. My thryoid was borderline low. After a year and half of trying we got husband sperm test. We found out that he has zero. That he will never have any. After six months of deciding between donor sperm or adoption, we are trying donor. I have already had one iui and will try it again in june.

They best advice is to do whats best for you. If your comfortable taking drugs, do it. If not, then thats Ok. No one here is judging you for your decisions. You will know the right path to take for your body. When you go to the specialist it is really scary. I hated it but its nice to know exactly your options.

If you have anymore questions just write. Even if you just want to complain and cry everyone knows how you feel.

Take care

Sarah

Nikki,

My hubby had a hard time at first, but his results were never to have a bio baby. Our options were adopt or donor. If it wasn't going to be his anyway, then he wanted the baby to at least be one of us. Another thing that helped hubby decide was he wanted to be there for the pregnancy and adoption wouldn't have let him. This process took about six months to finally decide on using donor.

Then we looked for someone we liked. I let hubby pick him out. We both felt so good about the donor that he has no reservations now. If you go through a bank it is so nice because you can have as much or as little info as you want. Also, everything is clean and they do great background checks on health and family. Using donor sperm helped out financially as well. It is a lot cheaper than adopting.

You and your hubby don't have to tell anyone what your doing so no one will know if you are using donor or your partner. We have only told my close family and friends. I hope this helps, let me know how it goes and keep strong because in the end you'll make the right decision for the both of you.

Take care,

Sarah
