UTI

Hi Dr. Jacobs
I would like your opinion. I was diagnosed with a UTI around 6 weeks pregnancy (E. Coli, 100,000 cfu) and was treated for one week with amoxi 500mg three times daily. We recultured one week off antibiotics and got the same results. They then tried keflex 500mg four times a day for a week. We just got the culture results back and again the same results. I have to go in for catheterization tomorrow and empirical treatment until results are received. I do not care how the UTI affects me. I am worried that it has harmed the baby seeing that I am now 12 weeks and still have it. Do I need to be worried, or is there a good chance it will not be a problem for the baby?

Thanks,
Linzie

Urinary tract infections do increase the risk of miscarriage and premature labor. Apparently the guesses as to the correvt antibiotic have not been accurate, so far. It may be too late to try to culture the organism. If you are currently taking antibiotics, they may inhibit growth in the lab, but not in your bladder.
Good luck.
