Progesterone supps really necessary?

Dr. Jacobs,

We just completed our third IUI. As far as testing shows, our problem is exclusively male factor. They prescribed progesterone suppositories but said they are optional.

Is there any real benefit to taking the progesterone if my wife is otherwise healthy and the lining looked good on the pre-IUI scans. We are not fans of taking unnecessary medication given potential side effects, etc. Is progesterone a "more-is-always-better" medication? When we had her progesterone checked 7 days after the prior IUI, they said the level was "beautiful."

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not all programs add progesterone supplementation for IUI cycles. I do. I think of it as cheap insurance. It is the same hormone the ovary makes after ovulation.
Good luck.
