I had my first IVF/ICSI/AH cycle in May which failed. I am 29yrs old, my husband is 32 we are dx with male factor only. I responded well to stimms (follistim 225U) and 19 eggs were retrieved, 15 mature. But only 5 fertilized with ICSI. The embryos were of mostly average quality, one was good ranging from 7-5 cell on day 3. We transferred 3 on day 3. but it failed. My main concern was the fertilization rate and also the embryo quality. He says the low fertilization rate isn't due to the eggs (since I had a normal FSH, my age, antral count 14, good response to stimms), but it may be the sperm. I thought ICSI bypassed the sperm issue? Could it be the eggs? can I try a different protocol to improve the eggs? What about eating more protein to improve egg quality? Should we test the sperm for fragmentation? any ideas/suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

It is possible that it is the eggs. It is also possible that is the sperm. The genes from the sperm do not play a role until day 3. There may be DNA framentation in the sper causing your problem. I am fortunate to collaborate with one of the few trained specialists in male fertility. He has been able to help us with these problems. Dietary changes will not provide a resolution to this problem. Good luck.
