Hi,
My name is Natosha. I just found out today. That I have to take the Lovenox injections for the next 4 months. I am 23 weeks pregnant. My mother just found out . That she has Factor 5 Leinden. So my Doc tested me. I have it. So I am worried now. But all these articles have helped. Thank you for all the information.

I'm 16 weeks pregnant.  I haven't been diagnosed with any particular clotting disorder, but at 13 weeks I had a pretty big clot in my leg behind my knee, big enough that it cut off my circulation.  My doc told me I'd have to take Lovenox until the end of the pregnancy.  I've been doing the shots twice a day and I'm completely covered with the biggest bruises I've ever seen over my entire abdomen.  From one injection, I now have a bruise that is more than 15" across.  I have many bruises everywhere I've done shots and the bruises are very painful - black/purple/blue/red/yellow.  Just horrible.  I'm running out of injection sites!  The shots themselves are no big deal to do. Sometimes they hurt, sometimes not.  I have to have a C-section at the end of the pregnancy, and I'm scared to death because everything I read says NEVER have an epidural or any kind of spinal anesthesia while on Lovenox.  My doc says we'll stop the Lovenox the day before.  THE DAY BEFORE, THAT'S IT???  The risk of permanent paralysis from spinal bleeding and bruising (and obviously I'm extremely prone to serious bruising) scares me way too much to do these shots all the way up until the day before.  I'm a very big girl so I'm on a high dose, and like I told the doc, they don't know exactly how long it will take this high dose to get out of my system.  Has anyone else had a C-section after taking Lovenox?  By my due date in August, I will have taken Lovenox for 6 months.  Thanks for listening!

Chris, I know you have probably heard all the advice you can stand right now, but I am also doing the Lovenox shots.  I was bruising the first couple weeks until I figured out a trick.  I put an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) on the spot I am gonna inject for a few minutes, swipe it with alcohol, do the shot, and then put the ice pack back on for 10-15 minutes.  I usually lay down for that last part (but I am really tired )  Now I have no more bruises.  And I have read everything in the world about Lovenox (including medical journals) and they all say it supposedly leaves your system in less than 24 hours.  That's probably the reason you only have to stop one day prior.  Tell your dr. you are worried and ask if you can be taken off any sooner.  Good luck!

Chris,

I am also taking Lovenox injects. I have a friend that is an anesthesiologist and she said she wont do an epidural until you are off the drug for at least 48 hours period c section or not. My Dr. is switching me to heparin just before I del. it only has a 12 hour turn around. The plan is to induce me, but just incase.

I wish you the best of luck.  I am also due in Aug.

Good evening ladies.

I just found out I'm pregnant and started the Lovenox tonight...is there anything that can be done about the stinging?  Ouch!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Best of luck to all of you on the injections...what we go through!!

Heathermac, Congradulations When I first started the injections I was getting really big bruises and it hurt, well I realized I was pinching the skin to hard and darting it to hard to get it over with. If you just pinch an inch and dart the needle in quick but not hard it will help, the second week I was on the shots I hardly bruised. I also have read some put ice on the area before and after, but never rub the area after the injection. I am sure they told you to rotate the areas, that helps too. even though I miscarried a week ago they have me doing the injections two more weeks since I had a d&c so I have one week to go. I hope this helps and have a healthy pregnancy!!!

This is my first time on this website and I am so grateful that I found it.  I just went through my third miscarriage.  I have been diagnosed with MTHFR mutation and C677T.  I have been trying to figure out what in the world this means for me.  I go to see my OBGYN on Monday to discuss my options.  I hope he knows something about this and I'll be able to have a healthy baby.

Misty welcome! I just found this site when I was pregnant in Feb and everyone is so helpful. I am homo for MTHFR mutation and I have hetro factor II. I found out last year after my first miscarriage. They will have you take extra folic acid Vb-12 Vb-6 usually a prescription ( I take folbee) I also take prenatal vitamins whether I am pregnant or not and 1 baby asprin. I just had my 2nd miscarriage almost 2 weeks ago. which they feel it was the MTHFR that caused it. I started lovenox injections (blood thinner)2 times a day this last pregnancy as soon as I found out, which most of the women here with the MTHFR have to take when they are pregnant, and there are many pregnancies going on right now who have MTHFR. let me know what the doctor says. and hopefully we can pass over to the pregnancy boards soon!!!

OneandonlyMel,
Thank you for replying.  It's nice having someone to talk to that has gone through a similar situation.  My doc put me on extra folic acid, b6, b12, baby aspirin and prenatal vitamin.  He said once I get pregnant I will start Heparin injections immediately.  It was so nice having an answer for all the miscarriages.  Hopefully, soon you and I will be talking about our healthy pregnancies.  Let me know your progress.

misty I went to the doctors today for my follow up after my miscarriage and we can start trying again after I have one cylce. She did say if I have one more they send me back to the genetic specialist and even though I have MTHFR and factor II it could be chromosome problems. My husband is getting a genetic test done next week just to rule anything on his side. I hope things go well for you and let me know your progress also.

Hi ladies!  I also have MTHFR, but only one copy which just requires extra folic acid.  I had my son nearly 8 years ago after an AWESOME pregnancy.  Since then I have had 3 miscarriages, but now I'm 23 weeks pregnant and IT'S A GIRL!  A beautiful, all parts accounted for, growing correctly little girl!  I know I don't have the more serious mutation of MTHFR like so many of you, but a miscarriage is a miscarriage and unfortunately so many of us can relate to that emotional upset.  I just want to say that this site is wonderful and I hope it offers much needed support and info to everyone that reads here.  I'm praying for you all daily...motherhood is a beautiful experience and I hope that God grants you each your wish!  I've got 4 months to go and will check in from time to time.  God Bless!!!  Camie

Hey everyone!  I had my ultrasound last Thursday.  It measured 6 wk 3 days, which was exactly right, plus we saw the heartbeat!!!  I am still worried though, because we saw the heartbeat the other 3 times I was pregnant too, and I ended up having m/c.  But I have never been on Lovenox before so I am praying!  Now I am on Lovenox (80 ml a day), progesterone supp., PNV, and the dr. just gave me Zofran for the nausea.  I worry about all the drugs, but as long as I have a healthy baby, ya' know?  Good luck to all y'all out there.

Hi Ladies -

I just found this support group and was very grateful.  There doesn't seem to be much information about blood clotting disorders and pregnancy on the internet.  If anyone has a good website I can go to for information, I would greatly appreciate.

I just found out last week that I am co-heterozygote for the Prothrombin gene mutation and for the Factor V Leiden mutation.  I have 2 children.  My first pregnancy was wonderful and uneventful.  My second pregnancy was wonderful up until 39wks 6d.  I had an extremely rare complication call Amniotic Fluid Embolism, which caused my placenta to abrupt, severe eclampsia followed with seziures, and an emergency c-section.  After the ceserean, I had a blood clotting issue called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) which caused massive hemmorhaging.  I was given 26 blood transfusions - 26 units of blood to save my life.  Its been 18 months now, and I am now crazily consdering another child.  Because of this I have been seeing specialists to see if it is possible, and in a Thrombophilia blood workup these mutations were discovered.  They now think an undetected blood clot might be to blame for what happened to me.  Who knows?

I am going to see a hemotologist next week for the first time.  I'm a little nervous, but its nice to know that there are other women out there who are having successful pregnancies with blood disorders.

Hope to chat with you all again soon!

Congratulations Camie and Rachel!!  It's exciting to hear that we can have a healthy pregnancy.  Hopefully soon Oneandonlymel and I will be talking about our pregnancies!  Keep me posted on your progress and I will do the same.  I can start trying next month.  It took me almost a year to get pregnant this last time, hopefully it will not take as long this time around.  I'll pray for all of you.    Misty
