I have the Favtor V Leiden mutation.  I lost two pregancys by 4 months and almost lost my daughter when I was pregnant the third time.  Thankfully I am now having a very good pregnancy with no conplications.  I have known that I had the disorder sence I was 16, my older sister died at the age of 21 from a massave heartatack.  The tested me for over 10 different disorders when they found that one.  My younger sister and my younger brother also have it.  My mother has the stronger of the two strains because she recieved it from both parents.  They have been treating my mother for clots sence she was in her early twentys, and they knew that she had to be on high doses of heprin during pregancy, but they just never thought of a disorder.  Had we know sooner I might not have lost my sister and nephue.  If any one has any questions about treatments or severe side affects of treatments please contact me.  I will share all that I know.

Angela,
I am currently taking Lovenox, and a baby aspirn a day. My Dr. started me on the aspirn before I concieved, but held off on the Lovenox until a heartbeat at 7 wks. My Dr. said if the pregnancy wasnt viable and I needed a D&C that the blood thinner would pose a problem, so we waited until we were sure I needeed it. I have 2 friends who also take lovenox, and they waited  to check viability to before starting.

Good Luck!

Marla,  Thank you so much for your reply.  I felt alot better knowing some women do start the the lovenox after a heartbeat is detected.  I just found out yesterday that Iam pregnant and will hopefully start the injections next week.  Thanks again

I took Lovenox and then Heparin (at the end) while I was pregnant with my son, who is now 4 years old.  I was tested positive for anticardiolipin antibodies.  I had to take blood test once a week when I found out I was pregnant to see when I would start the shots.  I became pregnant in May and didn't start the shots until July but was told with the next baby I would start them right away.  According to my doctor, Lovenox is "heparin that they took all the bad stuff out of".  In other words, you really don't bruise from Lovenox and it doesn't cause bone loss like heparin (I have a strong family history of osteoporosis).  Heparin is also considerably less expensive.  However, I only took Lovenox once a day and had to take the Heparin, when I switched, twice a day.  I was able to get insulin needles through my doctor and used them which made the injections painless.  Luckily I only had to give myself 3 or 4 shots my entire pregnancy.  I work with my mom so she or my husband did most of them.  My son is the light of my life, he is a beautiful, bright, healthy little boy, who was well worth anything I had to go through to have him.  May God bless all of you and your babies.  Feel free to email me if you would like to chat about the shots more - Jake is my favorite topic of conversation!!

Well let me tell ya'll my story! I have had 10 yes thats right 10 misscarriages!! all in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy. I'v ben to 4 infertility doctors and genetic testing and they all say nothing is wrong with me that they can determine why I keep having misscarriges.  The infertility doctor i'm seeing now says that i have a predisposition to blood clot so he has me using the ovulation predictor kit. 3 days after I get the LH surge, I go on Lovenox injections till I either start my period (then stop taking the shots & try again next month) Or concieve and have to take the shots for three months. I have no children (Of my own womb that is I have a wonder full stepson whom I'v had since he was 2 years old)  I am due to start my cycle next week,so we'll see what happens. Thanks for all the advice on this site!!

hello, I also have a clotting disorder, I was pregnant last year in Dec and everything was fine, at 7 weeks I had a normal ultrasound, yet I also was concerned because my father has factor 5 and I had a dvt in my calf 4 years ago after knee surgery, yet the doctors didnt' seem concerned, only a nurse practioner was interested and ordered genetic testing, I miscarried 24 hrs after the 22 viles of blood were drawn for the testing! That was Feb 2004, I was told I have homo MTHFR and hetero Factor II clotting disorder. It had taken us 3 yrs to get pregnant, It is now a year later and I just found out I am pregnant (on Valentines day) only 2 weeks, I was told to start levonx the moment I was diagnosed pregnant,  I aslo have been taking Prenatal, folbee ( folic acid v-6 and v-12) calcium and a baby aspirin since I was diagnosed, The genetic specialist wants me on all those for the rest of my life whether I am pregnant or not. I started my shots yesterday and had hcg level drawn to make sure its doubling, the first one was really low because I am only 2 weeks! I am so nervous about miscarrying , It's nice to hear those who were on the levonox gave birth to healthy babies, Good luck to all of us!!!!!!!

I am about 7 weeks pregnant and I had one miscarriage about a year ago. My doctor tested me for Factor V Leiden Mutation and it came back positive. I am giving myself shots of Levonox everyday and I am struggling with the worries everyday of the "what ifs."I never knew that I had this blood disorder, but they say that it should not effect me in the long run. If anyone out there has had several miscarriages, it is a good idea to ask your doctor about this blood disorder. Doctors just don't test for it because it is not "cost effective."

Heather, first of all - congratulations on your pregnancy. I am also seven weeks. I'd love to follow along with you.  You should post on the pg after infertility web site. My friend is also doing the Lovenox injections and report they're a little painful - stinging and all. She's fairly nervous about her pg also.
Good luck to you and I hope you post on the other board as well.
Much love Jen

I have a clotting disorder, too.  I'm on a 5mg of folic acid a day, and two of the the b6/b12 a day.  I assume I have the MTHFR (??).  But, no one has ever suggested lovenox or baby aspirin or coumadin.  My mother has terrible blod clots in her legs so she is on blood thinner, but I never connected the two.  Duh.

Should I ask my RE about being on anything for this??  We're doing our third IUI this week, and I really hate going through this again.

I'm so glad to have found this site.  SO GLAD!!

Thanks, ladies!!

Heathermac, If I were you I would find out exactly what you have. Did you have genetic testing done? My father has had many blood clots and has Factor IV, I also had a blood clot after a knee surgery, so the history of the two brought on the testing. If you only have MTHFR you may only need folic acid, but if you have a clotting disorder on top of that , then they usually discuss baby aspirin and blood thinners, its gets complicated because there is homo- which mean you have two genes mutated that you inherited from both parents and hetero which only one gene is mutated.  I have homo for MTHFR, and hetero for factor II, which can cause a miscarriage because the blood flow to the baby gets cut off from the clotting disorder. Let me know what they tell you, I am 5 weeks and started levonox shots the day after I tested positive, which was last week, I am also 35 been married 5 years in may.

Heathermac, just wanted to tell you, my obgyn's office was very unfamiliar with my problem, which made me nervous, when I went for blood work to check my clotting they didnt' even know what it was and had to look it up, I have a report from the genetic specailist that states what they need to do, I have had to be a bitchy pregnant woman trying to make sure things are done correctly. I finally talked to my nurse practioner and they are going to keep in contact with the genetic specialist. Don't let them push you aside, it is thier postion to explain to you what you have and how it is going to be dealt with! let me know what happens!!

Melanie,

I saw my RE today who explained EVERYTHING to me and what every tiny problem might be and how they handle it!  WHEW!!  I was so relieved.  I had e-mailed my other doctor who found the mutation to ask him questions and this was his reply:

"I DON'T HAVE TIME TO EXPLAIN MOLECULAR GENETICS TO YOU"

Hello?

So, having lost my give a damn, I wrote back, in capitals, that I wasn't asking him to explain moelcular genetics to me, just a little more about the mutation I have to deal with.  What an ass.

So, I did get some great information today from my RE and I feel much better about it...his partner had just returned from a seminar on the whole subject, so I feel I'm in really good hands there.  My Ob/Gyn is pretty up on the whole thing, too, it's just the Endocrinologist who doesn't want to spend time educating his patients.

THANK YOU for helping to alleviate my fears and to know what questions to ask...I asked them all this morning and got the answers I needed...thanks to you!!

Have a great afternoon!!

heathermac, I am glad you got answers! So do you only have a mutation for the MTHFR (folic acid) you don't have any other clotting problem? I am going for my 6th week ultrasound next Monday, Feb 28th, I am so nervous. Last pregnancy my first ultrasound was normal and I miscarried a week later, so until I entire my 2nd trimester I will be a wreck.  Keep me updated

You know, I'm having the hardest time getting any information from my Endocrinologist about my blood work.  He's suddenly gotten self-important and doesn't have time to answer my questions.  He told me I didn't need to do anything other than take the folic acid, but my RE said he would put me on Lovenox when I became pregnant.  Right now, I haven't much confidence in a doctor I once believed in wholeheartedly.

So, while I would love to know whether or not I have any clotting disorders other than the MTHFR, I'm not getting much support from the doctor who could tell me the most about it.

How are you doing??
