I just found out that I tested positive for one C677T and one A1298C gene mutation. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who also has tested positive for these mutations and what treatment they were given during a pregnancy. I recently lost a son at 20 weeks. And I am concerned about how this might affect me in the future. Any help/advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

If at first you don't succeed try and try again!

Cladesigns- I also have the MTHFR gene mutation. I have 2 of the same mutations, I think it is the A1298C but it has been so long since I was diagnosed I am not sure. Anyway regardless of which mutations the treatment is the same. I was put on extra folic acid and a baby asprin. I take 2 mg of folic acid in the am and 1mg of folic acid along with a prenatal that has 1 full mg of folic acid and baby asprin in the pm. I found out when I was 7 weeks pregnant and started right away however I was warned it may already be too late. I lost that baby at 11 weeks. I am still trying to get pregnant since that last m/c and have been on the same treatment. We just finished our first IVF/ICSI and will now the results 2/9/08. If I were you I would schedule a consultation with a ob-gyn who specializes in high risk pregnancy. They can guide you as to what to do when you decide you want to try again. Extra folic acid is very important if you decide to try to get pg again. You may also want to talk about this with your general practitioner since this mutation affects your body's ability to metabolize folic acid and may raise homocystein levels. This can affect your heart and put you at risk for bloodclots. So it may be wise to incorporate extra folic acid and 1 baby asprin daily into your diet for general health reasons. They don't always recommend it unless your homocystein levels are high, but it is worth looking into. Good luck!

Thank you for the information. I was reading up on the mutations yesterday and found out about the folic acid. I started taking an extra folic acid in the am along with a baby asprin and my prenatal vitamin. I am not pg yet. But I have heard that prenatals are better for you than reg vitamins. So I have started that already. I will look into getting an appointment with a high risk ob asap. Not that I am expecting to get pg anytime soon. But it will help my mind and my dh's mind at ease if we know what to expect. I will definitely check with my reg dr to. Just to make sure that I am doing everything that I can to make sure that I am healthy.
Good Luck on the 9th. Let me know how it goes.

Cladesigns- I scheduled my appointment with the high risk ob within a few weeks of my m/c even though I knew we had to wait to try again anyway. I felt I wanted to know what to expect next time and what if anything I should be doing different before hand. So if it will help ease your worries then why wait it doesn't hurt to talk to someone. Good luck with everything and keep me posted on what the doctors say. I will definitely let you know what happens on the 9th. I am praying it is good news.

I definitely want to know what to expect. That way I can have a plan for the whole pregnancy. I want to make sure that I am as prepared as I can be for when it does happen. I am also going to consult another high risk ob. He lives in Colorado, but he is family and it's always good to have a second opinion. And it's nice that he doesn't have a problem talking to me and my dh over the phone to tell us what he would do if I were his patient.
I hope that your appt brings you good news. I will be praying for you. And I will definitely let you know what I find out. Thanks for all your help/advice.
Good Luck.
