It is a relief to find a forum like this one. I just found out i am pregant and i have a history of DVT and PE (the cause was the birth control pill and a long plane flight). The doctor wants me on heparin and everything i have read suggests that lovenox is the way to go if you're pregnant - less chance of developing osteoporosis and thrombocytopenia. Does anyone have any advice on which way to go? Heparin vs. Lovenox?
I am 9 weeks pregnant today and am due to start the lovenox injections tomorrow. This will be my 3rd attempt at having a baby. I am excited but of course a little scared. I am 31. I have been on 81mg baby aspirin since June 14th when my OBGYN discovered I had antiphospholipid syndrome. We were going to start fertility pills anyways knowing the risks of what I would have to do once pregnant and found out on June 29 that we were already pregnant.
We had our 1st ultra sound last week and they detected a heartbeat. So needless to say, I am excited to start the shots but again, scared. I have wanted this my entire life and am only thinking optimistically. I am so glad to have found you all and please share, share, share.
CONGRATULATIONS!! This is great news!! I wish you a very healthy and uncomplicated pregnancy...enjoy the 9 months, they go by SO quickly!!
Don't be scared about the Lovenox injections. Think of it as something you're doing for your baby, not for you or to you. This is an incredible act of love, so each time you have to take your shot, remember it's for the baby. Yes, they can sting, and yes, you will probably bruise, but what would you be willing do for your baby? What would you do to get that baby here safely? While I know it is something you really have to do to ensure the safety of your pregnancy, this is a wonderful gesture for your baby, and you'll be fine.

Hi, I just found out today that I have Factor 5 and MTHFR. My dr wants me to start Lovenox 60mg injections daily starting tonight and a prescription folic acid (Folgard). I am already on a baby aspiring (since June 26). I am 15 weeks pg. I am already seeing a high risk dr because of my diabetes and high blood pressure. I have had 4 prior miscarriages. That is what prompted him to do the bloodwork in the first place. I didn't expect anything to come back abnormal, that's for sure.
I am really scared about starting the lovenox. From what I was reading, it can cause spotting if taken in combination with the baby aspirin. What's the likelihood of it causing spotting? I know if I see anything closely resembling blood I will freak out thinking another mc is on the way.
Also, it seems like everybody else starts it early in pregnancy or even before conceiving. Has anybody else started it this late with success?
Hi Christina 51878, Just wanted to let you know you are not alone starting Lovenox late. I was 18 weeks preg. when I found out I had factor 5. I am 29 weeks today, and they are going to do my c-sec. on 9/13/06. I am waiting results on several other test for diff. clotting factors. So far, so good on the lovenox. I take 70 mg 2 X a day. So try to relax! One thing that I really like is the lovenox helps reduce swelling, and that is a wonderful benefit too! GOOD LUCK to you!
Hi to you all, First I would like to say that I had a false alarm last month but still working on it. But anyways, Is there anyone that can tell me why when I try to inject my medication on my stomach I can't push the needle in, it feels like all the fat has harden. It really hurts, I get frustrated, I cry, for real I cannot take it anymore. I know I should go and ask my doctor this but I just wanted to know if any of you lovenox users have experienced something like this before. If any of you can answer me I will be more than appreciated. Please I need an answer. Thank you and good luck to you all.
Yes, I got hard spots, too, but you have to alternate your injection sites every time. You can shoot close to the hard bits, but find a squishy bit to inject. It's difficult, no one said it would be easy, but the rewards are far greater than you could imagine. The Lovenox hurts going in so you have to inject slowly. I used to breathe deeply and count during each injection. I did whatever was necessary to get that medicine in my body...so you need to find what works for you. Maybe DH shoots it into your hip...just find a way to make it work and remember that the instant that baby is born you won't remember ANY of these injections!!

I'm new to this page (and being PG! ), but have been reading it and have found all the comments very helpful. I don't know if I read it here or somewhere else, but inject the Lovenox very slowly, and your bruises will almost completely go away. It may sting a little, but it's definitely worth it! I had HUGE & NASTY bruises - some as big as my whole hand on my stomach and I was getting nervous because after about 10 days of injections 2x/day, I was running out of places to inject. My whole stomach was one huge, nasty bruise. I slowly injected my last two shots and I have NO BRUISING. Let's hope it lasts. Thanks again to everyone for sharing their comments - they're very helpful!
I am 12 weeks preganant and have been taking the Lovenox shots for the past 2 weeks. The info on this site is great and it helps to know others that are experiencing the same thing. Does anyone have any hints on preventing so much bruising? I guess its just one of those things that you have to deal with.
Hi Everyone, I am new to this page. I am starting lovenox in the next few days and I am worried about it. I was first diagnosed with Antiphospholipid Syndrome after having a stroke, and then my doctors thought that it was actually caused by my birth control pills. Either way, I am on Coumadin right not. My husband and I are trying for our first child and so my doctor has put me on Lovenox. I am so scared about taking it. I had to take it once when my blood levels were really low. All I remember about it was that I hurt when it was injected I bruised really bad. I guess I just need to hear that it is not that bad........
hi ladies!... im new to the forum i kinda stumbled on it looking for some x-tra info on pregnancy and lovenox. im currently 24 weeks and have been on lovenox injections since i found out i was pregnant at 6weeks bc i have lupis anticoagulants.. the lovenox does hurt at times but i find if i inject in my upper thigh or buttox it doesnt hurt half as bad. i take 80mg twice a day and that it after it being upped more than 3 times. has anyone had to have their dossage upped so much? im worried my body isnt holding the lovenox and is trying to pass it or reject it.
I have Factor V disorder. I was diagnosed after having a blot clot in my leg for 4 days. I thought it was a muscle cramp. This all happened at 10 weeks pregnant. I am now 23 weeks. I see 3 different doctors routinely. I take 100 mg lovenox 2X daily. I get tired of the shots also, they burn at times. Bruising is a problem for me also, I rotate 2 different circles around my navel. One is closer to belly button, the other is within 3 inches of belly button. The inner circle doesn't hurt as much. Lie down and Breathe while administering the dosage. Think of the outcome.
Hi, I am a newbie at this. I have been taking Coumadin for about 4 years now for an unknown issue with my blood clotting. I had a stroke and a pulmonary embliss which the pulmonary embolism was caused by birth control after I had the stroke. Okay, that is my history. I want to now have a child. It's my understanding that I will be switching off the Coumadin and taking either Lovenox or Heparin. I have heard Lovenox has less birth defects and problems than with Heparin. My biggest concern here is that because of weird blood clotting issue, I wonder if I can take the Lovenox instead of the Heparin. I am concerned of the birth affects that may be associated with the Heparin. This would be my first child and I am 30 yrs old. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

If you are able to take Heparin, you will be able to take Lovenox. Typically, you will take Lovenox until you are 32 or 34 weeks, then you will switch to the Heparin, then back to the Lovenox for six weeks after the baby is born. The reason being is that Heparin is more surgery safe should you need a c-section, or any kind of emergency surgery. Lovenox is not as surgery friendly, though if you should need any kind of emergency surgery while on the Lovenox, there are medications you will be given to circumvent that.

Hello everyone- I'm 3o and have been on Coumadin for 8 years due to a DVT secondary to Lupus. I also have a positive ANA. I going to try and start a family soon and have already been to my Hematologist to develope a plan for my pregnancy. He strongly recommended Lovenox. I have been doing some research but still have some questions.
Has anyone started Lovenox prior to getting pregnant? (Coumadin can have severe side affects to a fetus)
My doctor did not mention switching to heparin weeks before delivery for surgical reasons - has any one had an epideral on Lovenox?
Has anyone had a vaginal delivery or is c-section a must on Lovenox?
Hi my name is Mary. I just wanted to ask u a question, I also have lupus anticoagulant and take lovenox 80mg, supposely 2x a day but I only do it once, I cannot take the pain at all. I am 2 months pregnant right now and praying for everything to be ok. My question is, How do u inject urself on your buttocks? I have also tried my upper thigh but it burns too much. Please answer back as soon as u can. Thank you in advance and best wishes for u on ur pregnancy.
