Hi,
My cousin just found out that she has the MTHFR mutation after a miscarriage at 6 months. But, this was her third pregnancy and her first two were normal. I don't know if she is homozygous or hetero. But there is hope, just find a good doctor and get plenty of B vitamins.

Tanya,
Thank you. My OB was not that familiar with C677T so he checked with a fertility specialists who said that. At this point, it is the only explanation of why I miscarried that he could come up with. I remember him telling me a bunch of technical stuff but do not know if I am homozygosity or heterzygosity.
I've done a lot of research since he called and have found most Dr's either believe it or they don't -- no middle ground. They did a DNA test on my second fetus and it was normal. Something happened within days of us seeing the heartbeat that caused the miscarriage. At this point, I have to believe it is somehow related.
I'm starting on clomid next month just to start ovulating again & he wants to monitor me. He didn't put me on aspirin but there is aspirin in my headache/migraine medicine so I get it almost daily anyway. He plans to put me on progesterone when I do get pregnant just in case that was the cause. Who knows. I'm just trying to stay positive and maybe one day I will have a baby.
Thank you for your imput and congrats on your baby girl.

Theresa,
If your lab slip said you have one copy of the mutation, then you are heterozygous, and the mutation is not the reason for your miscarriage. Homozygous means two copies of the mutation, and that is associated with increased risk of poor pregnancy outcome, blood clots and heart disease. Compound heterozygous means 1 copy of each of two separate mutations, usually C677T and A1298C. That also can lead to the same complications. I found this chat site while doing online research on MTHFR, and am glad that it exists. Readers, do your doctors know about it?

First I'd like to thank all of you for sharing your loses and info. I have been diagnosed with MTHFR- heterozygous. I had 2 miscarrages in the last 2 years, all ending before 12 weeks. Dr. placed me on folic acid and if I become pregnant I will have to have Lovenox shots. They are concerned that I may be Protein C deficient. They are unable to rule that out completely at this time, levels are good when I'm not pregnant.

Hi everyone, my name is Jenniffer and my little sister has the mthfr mutation and had to be on baby asprin to get pregnant and then she had to take 7500 units of heprin once a day. She dont remember what test she had to have done to find out if she had it. She also had 2 miscarriages and had no clue as what wa causeing it. She was lucky to have a good Dr who found it for her. I am 21 and with a wonderful man and we have decided that it is time for us to have a child of our own. I got pregnant when I was 18 year's old. I had had a real bad kidney infection and had to go to the ER to get treatment and they did a pregnancy test on me and the dr told me that I was pregnant. I was in shock well I never got to go to the OBGYN because I had to go down to the healt department to get on medicad. Well when i went they also did a pregnancy test on me and it came back negitive and I showed them my paper from the ER and they said that I probly misscarriage shorrly after my visit to the ER. SHould I have the test done to see if I have mthfr?
Sorry I have never shared this story with anyone and I guess I needed the release.

Hello... I just found out that I have MTHFR on Tuesday. I am so confused... I have had 2 m/c. My specialist put me on 4mg. of folic acid and b12 and b6. But said nothing about anything to help with clotting. I don't know why. I guess this is something I'll need to ask about. If anyone has a good site that explains this disease could you please let me know. Thanks!

Kim,
The folic acid and b vitamins will help lower your homocystine levels, and your homocystine levels will cause your blood to thicken and clot, which can cause all kinds of problems including miscarriage. So, the meds he has put you on will help with your clotting problems...I've just found that most doctors don't explain things thoroughly enough to their patients.
My doctor put me on 5mg of folic acid and 2 Foltx tablets which are a a b6/b12 combo with some more folic acid. Once I found out I was pregnant, my doctor put me on Lovenox injections (30mg twice a day). I'm now 15 weeks pregnant and tremendously thankful that God has given me doctors that know how to circumvent my problems.
So, your doc is doing the right thing, just not explaining enough to you why he's doing it. I've learned to ask TONS of questions...that's why you pay them...so take a piece of paper and take notes and ask question after question after question! If you don't get the answer you're looking for, ask some more until you get the answers you need!
Good luck to you and know this is just one step towards success!!

Hi Jennifer,
It's quite a few days after your post, but I just wanted to suggest asking your OB/GYN to run some blood tests on you. Explain your sister's MTHFR positive status, and your 1 m/c, and that should be enough to warrant the blood tests.
There's a whole battery of tests....but included will be tests of your homocysteine levels and determine whether or not you too are positive for MTHFR.
Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Have hope and you will be fine.

Frankie I also have home MTHFR (plus Factor II) When I was diagnosed the genetic doctor said I will have to take extra folic, B-6 and B12 plus prenatal and baby aspirin for the rest of my life. I have had 3 miscarriages and I am currently 14 weeks pregnant which I haven't made it this far in the past. They started me on Lovenox shots 6 days after ovulation and that seem to be the key, I take 80mg twice a day.

So I too have been found to have this problem. Only I am still very in the dark. I am now 9 weeks pg (with my 2nd child) and apparently had this t/o my 1st pg and was never really told much about it. So at my 1st OB appt. they look over all the past tests and etc. and it shows about this heterozygous for MTHFR mutation. I do not recall anyone telling me about it in my 1st pg and now it seems they are concerned. BUT>>> I was never told about a risk of m/c or anything. My dr just called and wants me to start a daily dose of baby asprin till 36 weeks and continue my vitamins-that is ALL I was told- I have found more info. here than anywhere else. I am kinda freakin out thinking it is more serious than I am being lead to believe. Should I be worried? Should I get another opinion? SHould I speak to my cardiologist? I have high bp which I read is a risk factor?? ANy help would be great-thanks

I was 7 weeks pregnant this time when my doctor told me I had the C677T mutation and I was being put on baby asprin & Lovenox injections. I have been taking the baby asprin & 30mg injection 2x daily ever since. Next week I will be switched to heparin until I deliver. I have regular NST's & u/s's, so far my baby boy is healthy as can be in there we are set to deliver around thanksgiving, I know what I will be giving my thanks for this year

I found this site while researching MTHFR. I have had to m/c within the last 6 months. My last one occurred 2 weeks ago. I did 4 mo. of Clomid, and am seeing an infertility specialist. I did one IUI, got pregnant, then m/c at only 4 weeks. I then called my OB and requested testing, only after a friend told me about MTHFR. I tested positive for compound heterozygous for the C677T and A1298C mutation. My OB said that is why I have had two m/c. I talked to my infertility specialist today (I am getting ready for another IUI) and he doesn't really believe in MTHFR. It is so strange to me that one dr. believes in it and tells me that is why I m/c and another dr. doesn't believe in it. I am being sent to a high risk preg. spec. on Halloween, for possible heparin or lovenox shots. I have been told all sorts of things, about blood clots, possibilities for birth defects, and poss. for heart disease. Don't really know what is true, because there is too much conflicting information. It is nice to know other people have the same thing as me. I have found out one thing for sure; you have to be pro-active when it comes to your health.
