Jester,

It's really hard because I feel like I have no one to talk to.  I don't tell anyone at work anything about trying to get p/g - I just don't want people constantly asking.  When we first decided to have a baby, I told one of my good friends - all of a sudden she decided she was going to try too (she already has one older).  Of course she went on to have healthy twins.  I was devastated.  It has pushed me further and further away from her and from all of my friends with babies.  I just can't deal with it without wanting to break down crying.  I took the day off of work yesterday because of the bleeding and today my boss asked if everything was ok.  I started to tear up and said it was just something personal - I wish I hadn't started crying!

I haven't heard on my HCG count yet - makes me worried that it's low and that's why they're waiting till the end of the day to tell me.

I sometimes feel like it's never gonna happen for me.  I thought I would have problems ttc considering my age, but I never thought I'd have so many other complications.  It's really too much sometimes.

Thanks for listening and for you kind words.

I just found out that I have both copies of the C677T MTHFR AND 1 copy of the Prothrombin gene mutation.  I'm done having children now but went through extensive IF treatment for both kids (for PCOS).  I had 2 early mc's but ultimately 2 pregnancies that were keepers.  My daughter is 100% but my son does have mild neurological issues that could be clot related.  He gets speech therapy and occupational therapy but cognitively he's in a gifted center for school.  So yes it can turn out better than all right but now since you know and can get better treatment than I had you should have every chance in the world for a positive outcome.

Hello all, My heart goes out to all of you who experienced MC's. Like many of you, I had two MC at the beginning of my second trimester for unexplained reasons. When I became pregnant a third time, my OB told me to take one baby aspirin every day along with prescription prenatal vitamins. I worked FT during that pregnancy and experienced several superficial blood clots. I gave bith to a 8 lb 6oz healthy baby girl at 40 weeks. 5 years later before deciding to try again, I went to the Reproductive Medicine Group in Tampa and asked for a blood panel screening for all types of blood clotting disorders associated with pregnancy. I am the youngest of 7 siblings and all of my sisters had a MC. They found 1 copy of C677T on the MTHFR gene. For my next pregnancy I was again placed on baby aspirin and prenatals prior to becoming pregnant.  I again experienced a few superficial clots as I was working FT. My OB stopped the aspirin at 36 weeks and induced at 37. We were blessed with a healthy baby boy. I am now 33 weeks pregnant with another son, but have not experienced any clotting issues or swelling. The biggest reason for this is that I stopped working prior to this pregnancy. What a difference not working makes on your body!

I was told that because I had only one copy that I did not need any other blood thinner other then good ole fashioned baby aspirin. If your Doctor is one that thinks MTHFR is insignificant or that it could not be the cause of MC, I recommend getting a new doctor and taking a daily dose of baby aspirin. I have three healthy children to prove that it works. Also, if you have female sibling, I recommend that they get tested prior to concieving. You could spare them a whole lot of heartache. Best Wishes to all. Kitty

is there anything that can be done?

has anyone had a happy ending?

Hi There,

I'll try to give you a little hope. I have PCSO and i discovered i also had MTHFR when i was pregnant with my daughter in 2001. In 1996 my first pregnancy ended early on- there was no fetal pole present. My second pregnancy ended in miscarrige a few months later. I then went on to have loads of IUI's and a couple of IVF's. The 1st IVF didn't work  but the 2nd did...i was pregnant with twins. Sadly i miscarriged the first twin early at about 5 weeks...but i managed to hold on to the 2nd twin for 3 1/2 months...then that baby also died. I gave up trying as i didn't think i could take any more------- i think my brain needed a rest. Six months later i discovered i was pregnant naturally....at 12 weeks i had a massive haemorrhage and was told i'd lost the baby, but after having a scan it showed the baby was still there.... at 20 weeks pregnant my results came back saying i had MTHFR. At 21 weeks i went into labour which the doctors managed to stop...then at 24 weeks and 2 days i again went into labour, but this time the doctors were unable to stop the labour and my beautiful daughter was born weighing 650grams ( 1 lb 7 oz) Hannah is now a wonderful and healthy 5 1/2 year old who is looking forward to starting her 2nd year at her primary school. Looking at Hannah now you'd never know what she or I ever went through, so try not to ever give up hope but remember every now and then that your body and brain need a break from all the stress of trying for a baby. GOOD LUCK

Hello Sue,
My name is Christine and I too have the MTFHR gene and  have homocystinemia. I have undergone multiple infertility treatments annd have been unsuccessful! I gave up after four years of trying, and now it has been 7!!I am 38, currently finishing my Bachelor degree in nursing, and have recently decided to trythe one thing I never had before- IVF. I admit I am scared due to the blood disorders and my age. My advice to you is this... have faith my friend, and ask lots of questions-and yes definately see a perineonatologist ( he or she can break down all of the particulars about the gene and hopefully help you feel a bit better, listen to what the doctors recommend, and keep a journal for any questions that may come to you- I wish you all the best of strength, and faith!

I actually am pregnant 8 weeks through IVF for the first time.  I have never been pregnant before.  However, my fertility specialist stated that I tested positive for MTFHR and APA, as well as my homocystine levels were abnormal??  Therefore, I have been on Heparin 5000 injections twice daily since they confirmed the pregnancy on 1/23/06.  I also am taking folgart 2.2 mg. twice daily and baby aspirin orally.

I have never been pregnant before, nor had any miscarriages.  Can any one explain what MTFHR is?  I am so confused??  No one in my family has a history of cardiovascular and/or vascular problems.  And, I was told by my obgyn that once she studies the testing results I may have to continue the injections through the whole pregnancy and see a high risk specialist.

I am scared.

Hello-

I just found out after 4 years of trying and 5 m/c that I have MTHFR/2 copies of the C677T mutation.  This is the 2nd fertility specialist I have seen. The first one had never mentioned this. I am still in the midst of my evaluation - should know more by the end of November when all my test results have come back.  So far Dr. has prescribed 5mg Folic Acid, Pre-natal vitamin & 1 baby aspiring daily from now on.  I am 30 years old and hoping that this dr will help me to achieve pregnancy.  I only took the folic acid for the 1st time today but it is making me really nauseaus. Does anyone have any suggestions?  Do you break it up and take some int he morning or some at night? Maybe before bed would be better.  Has anyone else followed up with a cardiologist?  I did not ask Dr. about that but the possibilities of heart disease or stroke are really scary.

Yesterday, after a MC this Fall, I found out I am positive for 2 copies of the C677T Mutation. I am eager to try to have a successful pregnancy with aspirin, and Heparin as the reproductive endocrinologist recommended. However, I can't find a decent OBGYN here in NYC who would follow me through such a pregnancy. After the last MC, I was heartbroken and dissapointed by 3 totally limitted dr.s. It is really scairy to not be able to find someone good. There are some at Cornell Hospital, but the hospital doesn't take GHI! In addition to my concerns, I was doing some research on line and found an article called "Polymorphisms in the MTHFR Gene Are Associated with Breast Cancer". I had blood from a nipple years ago, and lots of breast cancer in the family. I am eager to read some happy success stories here! Also, before conceiving I am only taking aspirin and 1 gm folic acid, no one has told me to take B6 or B12 - clearly I need a good dr!!

Hi,  I have MTHFR C677T (one copy )..  there is a hematologist in NYC that everyone recommends.  Her name is Orli Etingen..  I dont have her number but if you google her name she will come up.  She is affiliated with Cornell.  I actually have a appointment with her on Feb 15.  I'm pregnant with twins from a dec IVF cycle.  I'm on folgard twice a day, and lovenox 30 mg once a day.  My RE put me on this but doesnt think I need to be on the lovenox after 10 weeks.  I'm going to see the hematologist to make sure..  My RE put me on lovenox because I have a history of strokes and blood clots in my family.  So as a safeguard he put me on lovenox.  I have read so many stories online about the MTHFR gene causing miscarriage.    Good Luck.
