I had a 5 day transfer earlier today and they transferred two good blasts.  The embryologist told me that they will call me tomorrow and let me know if any of the remaining embryos will be good enough for cryopreserativon. My question is, how likely is it that any of the embryos will be good enough on Day 6? Why wouldn't they just go ahead and freeze them on Day 5?

It is routine in programs performing blastocyst transfer to cryopreserve embryos on both Day 5 and Day 6. There are two reasons for this. First, we will freeze no embryo before it's time. Blastocyst stage embryos freeze best when they are fully expaned (which sometimes takes until Day 6 to occur). Secondly, it is important to assess the quality of the embryo prior to freezing (poor uality embryos do not ususaly survive the freeze/thaw process). The embryo must be fully expanded to determine if there are a suffient number of stem cells within the embryo to make a baby.
