I am 40, and living in Thailand.
I have unexplained infertility but there is no male infertility factor.
My questions are vague I suppose, because whilst the care seems excellent so far I feel I don't have enough information in my own language from the clinic I am attending.

I haven't been given any indication of the likelihood of success with this  our first cycle of IVF. I have only 4 eggs, of 21, 19, 13 and 10mm.

I will have had 12 days of Puregon shots by 12th April, and egg retrieval is planned for 13th, all being well. I am taking nasal spray Suprefact every four hours.

Are you able to give me any indication of my chances? The doctor keeps making faces at me and suggesting he will have a very hard job of this one. Am I wasting my time and money?  I don't have any idea of where I stand on the scale of 'normality'. I don't want /cannot afford lots of cycles.

I would be so grateful for any response/encouragement. I am finding the process pretty difficult and emotional, all though I believe myslef to be perfectly healthy and so remain optimistic.

many many thanks

J

Here's where you stand. Approximately 80% of the follicles will yield and egg at retrieval; about 80% of the eggs will be mature (and only mature eggs can fertilize); about 80% of the mature eggs will fertilize; and, at age 40, about 20% of the resulting embryos will be genetically normal and capable of generating a term pregnancy (if they implant). If you do the math (20% of 80% of 80% of 80%), starting out with only four follicles doesn't leave much room for the attrition that will surely follow. Your chances are very slim, not zero, but very slim. Sorry, I'm sure this is not the encouragment your were looking for, but I think you need to be realistic about your chances.
