You should leave the decision about assisted hatching to your embryologist. His/her judgement will be based on whether the zona pellucida has adequately thinned, already. As far as " birth defects", you may want to have a pregnancy tested for chromosome count. There are some good screening tests, today, to determine if the pregnancy is at increased risk. Good luck.
