chance of miscarriage

Dear Dr. Jacobs,

After a 5 year history of unexplained infertility, my husband and I are completely amazed and shocked..I have become pregnant naturally. We have one son who is 2 years old who we conceived through IVF. We have had 2 IVF failures since July, and now we are suddenly pregnant. I am about 6 weeks right now.

I desperately want to be happy and optimistic but the 20% miscarriage statistic is haunting me. I have a fear of going for my first ultrasound appointment (scheduled 2 weeks from now) and there being no heartbeat.

Given my age (33) and previous full term pregnancy- is my chance for miscarriage truly 20% or perhaps less?

Thanks,
Tracy

Unless thgere are specific risk factors for miscarriage, Your risk for miscarriage, at the age of 33, is about 10%.
Good luck.
