High Embryo Attrition

Dr. Smith,

I really appreciate your honest, easily understood answers and I'm hoping you might have some insight into my situation.

My husband and I completed our first IVF cycle yesterday. I am 29 and my husband is 34. We are pursuing IVF because we are both carriers of cystic fibrosis and my husband is a carrier of an x-linked disease that we are using PGD to avoid.

Initially, everything looked great: we had 26 eggs retrieved, 18 mature and 16 that fertilized. Unfortunately, by day 3 we only had 7 embryos eligible for PGD (5 cells or more according to our lab). By day 5, only one embryo was eligible for transfer, but unfortunately it was one of the affected ones. Both my husband and myself went through the full battery of tests before beginning IVF and everything looked normal. Do you have any idea why we would have had such a high rate of embryo attrition/arrest? I'm wondering if we will continue to have this problem too...I never imagined when we started this process that we wouldn't even make it to embryo transfer.
