Day 5 transfer and risking loss of embyros?

Dear Dr. Smith,
I just completed my first IVF cycle and egg retrieval. I am doing IVF because I have a history of borderline tumors on my ovaries (they have been removed twice)and my gyne/onc says I will need an ooprectomy at some point and wants me to freeze embryos. I have one child who was conceived naturally without problems. I have no other known fertility problems.

With my cycle I only produced 7 eggs, 5 of which were mature and those 5 fertilized. My clinic called me today and told me that based on the number of embryos I have that I would need a 3 day transfer of 3 embryos. This was a complete shock to me. I was under the assumption that if the embryos were developing well you would go until day 5. I also only ever planned on transferring one since I have no other known fertility problems. I pushed the nurse on this and she eventually had the embryologist speak with me. The embryologist stated that all the embryos were cleaving on their own and had at least split into 2. She said that since they were checked early in the morning she would check them again and call me back. She did this and called me back saying that 4 of them had split again since the check earlier and that she was comfortable with a day 5 transfer. However, of course she told me that they could not guarantee that I would have any left to transfer by Saturday.

Is this why they were pushing a day 3 transfer? Am I not better off having one quality on day 5 vs. 3 not so good on day 3? I am also worried now I won't have any to freeze, which was the whole point in doing this. Could more than 1 make it to a day 5 transfer?

Thanks!
CStowe
