I haven't been on here in a while....I have a question though. I am now 27 weeks and my stomach has gotten tighter....I give myself lovenox 2x a day...now I have began to experience some anxiety in giving them. I feel like I am going to pop the sack or something. Obviously I will continue to grow and get large so I was just wondering if everyone continues to give themselves shots in the stomach or if they give them somewhere else with growth?? Both my blood doctor and my obgyn say I can not hurt the baby but I just get so worried. Any advice would be great!

hey mrspfunk,
i had my baby 6 weeks ago and until i hd him i gave my shots about 1-2 inches from my bellybutton. even when i had i larger needle i just went in at an angle. it freaked me out too because he would always move when i did it.your doctors are right, your not gonna hurt the baby.

I have been told to give my shots with the needle facing down not sideways...do you think thats still ok?

Hi all It's been awhile since I posted everything. The baby and I are doing well. All of my lab tests have gone back to normal and our little boy got to come home from the hospital after only 6 days. He is now almost 7 weeks old and it's crazy how much our life has changed. I am done with the Lovenox. My last dose was three days ago. To be honest I kind of miss that part of my routine. You get so used to something and I find myself thinking "oh no... I forgot my shot this morning" I have absolutly no doubt in my mind while looking at my beutiful son that this journey was totally worth it. I would do it all over in a heartbeat.
I noticed theres a few questions that haven't really gotten answered. Lizbodway asked about Factor Xa. The factor Xa is the step in the coagulation cascade (ie: the process the blood takes to clot) that is affected by Lovenox. The lab test just makes sure that you are getting a high enough dosage of the lovenox. I don't remember the range that it is supposed to be in, but in most cases it is supposed to be in the preventative range not a treatment range. (ie; prevent a blood clot not get rid of one). My doctor did the first Xa level about a week after my first dose of Lovenox and then again occasionally during my pregnancy to make sure it was still within the range.
Mrspfunk-- there is no way that you can hit the baby or anything associated with the baby when you give your shot. The needle that they do amniocentesis with is a whole lot longer than the lovenox needles and it has to be that long to get to the right area. In my experience as a got bigger the shot was actually easier because the skin was tighter (kind of like a balloon-- it's easier to stick a pin in a tight balloon rather than one that is partially deflated.) My husband did have to help me towards the end of the pregnancy because it got hard to pinch the inch before inserting the needle. I would push the skin together and he would give the shot.

mrspfunk,
the only reason i did some of my shots at an angle was because when i switched to heparin the pharm didnt have insulin needles so i had to use a much larger needle.other than that i always do mine straight in. its been 6 weeks since ive had my baby,so today i did my last lovenox shot! im so happy to be done with them!

Bdantonio:

yes, i was put on lovenox ( 40mg 1X per day ) only as a precaution. I have a 4 yr old daughter that i carried to full term and no complications. BUt since then i had 4 repeated miscarriages all under 10 weeks. So i decided after some tests and soforth & the dr;s not being able to find anything wrong- we decided to try lovenox as a precaution. I guess it may have been the solution- just had my baby a week ago- no complications. I switched to heparin 2Xs a day for the final 3 weeks but he came early ( 2 weeks) no issues..

I would for sure do it- you get used to the shots & if the outcome is good, why not? who knows if i really needed the lovenox but i am fine w/what i had to do...

good luck

Sorry I didn't get back to you very quickly, been kinda crazy here at home with the new baby. The doctor's concern was just that concern, nothing was really wrong she was just a small baby and that's just fine. I know from my wife's perspective delivering a smaller baby was a plus ;). I wouldn't get too nervous over your baby's size, ours was born just shy of 6lbs but they predicted her in the low 5's so they were a bit off there. She's at three weeks now and has already gained a pound and a half, so they catch up their weight super fast. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, just make sure you go out and buy a few smaller outfits, the newborn stuff we have was like a tent on her.

You can see in the short time she's been around, her color and face has filled out nicely.

Oh...also...

My wife was on precautionary dosage AKA prophylactic lovenox because they never found a solid reason too, better to be safe than sorry for you and your baby.

Late in my wife's pregnancy I was nervous about hitting the sac as well. Please be assured that even going straight in right above the baby won't even scratch the amniotic sac.

Here is the size needle that is needed to reach the sac...

Hi Gidd,
Thank you so much for replying. Grace is just beautiful. She has so much color now. How sweet!!! I have been informed that the results of the tests I mentioned to you came out negative. Turns out that she is just going to be small and that's all to it. You hit it on the nose, even with the clothes. I have already purchased some preemie clothing because even the newborn clothes look to big. I am counting down the days when I won't have to take anymore shots and of course see my little peanut. Our friend just had a 10lb 11oz and 22 inches long baby girl the other day. After 27 hours in labor, she had a c-section. I am totally excited about the size. It should definitely work towards my favor when delivering ;D. We are in week 31 now and have 6 or 7 more weeks to go. They plan on inducing by week 37 or 38. Wish me luck!!! Take care and thanks again for the response.

Just got back from the Doctor. So far, so good. My wife is actually a week less further along than we thought. She will 6 weeks tomorrow instead of 7. Everything up to this point looks good but we have to go back every week for the next 6-7 weeks to make sure.
I am a little more hopeful and relieved after today but still scared to death seeing we have had this happen with 2 other pg's in the past but lost them between the 1st and 2nd US's. Of course, this was before Lovenox and the all Folic acid and Baby Aspirin. I am just going to try and be as positive as long possible until they tell me something different.

autumnsky007 - May 17th, 2007 11:21 PM

KJB1028,
Hang in there. Your wife is already at a better start than the previous pregnancies. she is being watched closely. God willing, all will go well for the both of you. Be strong and positive!

Best,

My wife is on lovenox 30mg twice daily; she has been diganosed with Factor V. We are gonna see our hematologist this monday to get blood test to see if she has APS. However the day before, he doesnt want us to take the evening lovenox shot. DO you think this is correct should we miss a dosage in order to test for APS? Also he said if he doesnt find APS that we should discontinue the lovenox. I think that is crazy! Do you think we should continue the lovenox shot even though she doesnt have APS(antiphospholipid syndrome-clotting diease). I mean she has Factor V and teh lovenox treats it. Do you think we should seek a 2nd opinon. I told if there is no APS found i am still gonna give her a shot of lovenox. It has worked out for us and we are at 14w. We had 3 previous m/cs
