Zinnia,

Has your doctor appealed to your insurance company? Lovenox is not a covered drug by my insurance company, but my doctor appealed to them telling them it was a must that I be on this drug through my entire pregnancy and they approved it. I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a shot.

Good Luck

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and so grateful to have found this. I recently was diagnosed with a blood clot at the ER and was put on Heparin, Lovenox *and* coumadin. The ER never even asked if I was (or could be pregnant) and at the time, I didn't think I was (I had taken a pregnancy test that came out negative) so I didn't bring it up. Needless to say, when I went to have a follow-up visit with my primary care physician 2 days later, he asked the question (thank goodness) and had another pregnancy test done (which came out positive). So, overall I was on coumadin for 3 days (5 mg per day). I am really freaked out because I've read all these terrible things that coumadin can cause in early pregnancy. I'm on Lovenox only now (one shot a day - 150mg) and have a visit with my OB/GYN later this week. My pregnancy #s started low (146) but are over 1600 now (which I'm hoping is a good sign). I have had a successful pregnancy prior to this with no issues. Has anyone faced a similiar situation?

thanks PrincessB i just joined, hopefully they approve to let me in. im so glad you came here and now i can research everything before and make my decision based on that. :)

zinnia- I ditto what diasay said. Appeal to the insurance or try and research if your state offers some sort of perscription program/card you can get. Also, have you called the pharmasudical (spelling??) company and asked them if they have some sort of program for people who can't afford the drug at full price? Also, I've seen online some sort of maternity insurance card. I hope that helps...

jwsox- OH MY! The ER didn't do a pg test even though you said you didn't think so?!?!!? I'm not like this, but I'd be getting a lawyer. That is poor practice on their part, I think at least. Have you asked your Dr. All I know is that you are not to take coumadin while pg. But, you took a low dose for a short period of time. I *think* the most effect to your baby from coumadin happens during the 2nd trimester, I remember reading that somewhere. I too am grateful for finding this site, sometimes I feel so alone with the whole Lovenox situation.

Hello,
I am 5 months pregnant and am on lovenox (2x a day) because of a previous clot to the leg after being on a cast for a broken ankle. On top of that, I have a septum uterus and I have thyroid problems. The first couple of months were very hard for me. I'm still unsure that all is safe because I feel so alone in this. I am being closely monitored by many doctors. Is there anyone out there that has been through something similar and have come through with success?

zinnia - March 22nd, 2007 10:24 AM

Hi,

Thank you everybody for your suggestions. I have health Ins which covers the Lovenox but I have to pay 30% and that is like $240 a month. I called Blue Cross blue Shield and tryied to get them to covered it completely but it did not work. I am going to call several places for asistance and also see if I can order by mail and would be cheaper. I just got my doctors bill it needs to be paid by Sept and is 167 a month! This is crazy! The good side is that I saw the heartbeat yesterday!! yey! I am at 7wks today. I had a pap yesterday and did bleed a lot! that scared me to death! I am not bleeding today but a pass a piece of red skin. Has this happened to anybody else? The doctor said that is normal, plus I am using Lovenox so it would made me bleed more. But since I had 2 m/c I am very afraid of anything.

Gidd- I don't know anything about switching to Heparin, but I've read on here other women who have switched. I hope someone can give you some insight. Good luck!

ilovemydogs1978 - March 22nd, 2007 8:49 PM

Hi Gidd,
I just switched to heparin at 35 weeks, im 36 now. i have been having some high blood pressure issues thats why i switched about a week earlier, in case in needed to be induced. ive been taking it for a week now(twice a day) and like it better than lovenox, the needles are smaller and it dosent sting like lovenox does, and i only get very very small bruises. drawing it up isnt so bad, i work at an animal hosp. so i have experience with drawing up medications. im glad you and your wife are doing good. its hard to believe we made it so far.i find out for sure on tuesday when ill be induced but it might be next weekend.ive been in the hospital twice now because of high blood pressure so my doc might induce around 37-38 weeks.
Heather

Wow you are far along. Please update us often. There are a lot of new people who write but not many who are ready to deliver. After some of the less encouraging posts I would really like to see more from someone so far along. Especially after you deliver.
Thanks
Julia

Gidd - March 23rd, 2007 12:53 AM

TY Heather!

Shes starting on the Heparin next Wed (36 weeks). For those who don't know you will probably be switched off of Lovenox as you get close to delivery. There is some documented cases that show complications with anyone getting an Epidural while on Lovenox or other LMWH's. They switch you to Heparin so you can avoid that danger and still get the epidural.

Julia you bring up a good point, when we started this journey 8+ months ago it felt like forever. Now here we are closing in on the finish line. There were so many tears shed along the way and nights filled with long hugs to chase away the bouts of "I don't think I can do this". We are having a little girl, I keep a pair of little pink shoes we got as a gift on my nightstand. When the night seems rough and strength seems to be fading a bit I take a look at those shoes and remember why we are going through this. I am very proud of my wife just like everyone should be proud of all of you. As a man I am regretful inside that all of the pain my wife is going through is a burden that I cannot take from her and it makes me sad. I can only offer my love and support. I just wanted to say how much I value this forum and how amazed at the strength and dilligence the ladies of this board have. You should be proud of yourselves! Never doubt that you can make it, you can!

Trying Again - March 23rd, 2007 8:30 AM

Hi Gidd, I swear, you made me cry!! :)
You sound wonderful, just like my husband. And, yes, you are right, there isn't a darn thing you can do, although we wish you could take some of the pressure off of us. You being there, smiling and saying "I love you" is the best thing. Your wife is very lucky!!

jwsox - March 23rd, 2007 10:51 AM

Just wanted to send everyone an update. I met with my OB yesterday and we discussed my situation. He was very confident we wouldn't have any issues, though we are going to talk to a genetic counselor to be on the safe side. My doctor did phone the genetic counselor while we were there, and they did mention to my doctor that there is a 19-day window from the time you conceive that you are safe (i.e. they think the coumadin shouldn't be a factor). I'll share what more I learn once I meet with the genetics folks. For now, I am feeling much more optimistic.

amyjoy - March 23rd, 2007 2:41 PM

jwsox- Good news about the window period. It's nice for everyone to know that, just in case. I'm glad that you are feeling optimistic.

Gidd- thank you for your words of encouragement. It's been a rough week on my end.

Jean42506 - March 25th, 2007 4:53 PM

I wanted to let everyone know that we had our little boy on the 22nd. He was 5 weeks early (35 weeks). I ended up having to be induced because I developed the HELLP syndrome again. Thankfully they caught it a lot earlier in the disease process this time. I was not nearly as sick and it seems that it has not affected our little boy. He is still in the hospital ( i just came home today) but is doing well. He is breathing and eating on his own. He is just in there until he starts gaining weight. He weighed in at 4 lbs and 12 ounces. He also needs to practice eating and breathing at the same time but seems to be getting the hang of it. I beg you all to please send up a prayer for our little boy. Pray that he continues to do well and gets to come home soon.
I will be on the lovenox for six more weeks. Same dose twice a day. The doctor said that I could stay on the lovenox or switch to coumadin. On the coumadin I would have had to go get my blood checked once a week. I figure it is easier to stay on the lovenox.
