Hi Dr. Smith --

I'm not sure if this is the right category in which to post, but it can't hurt! Please just tell me to try somewhere else it this is not within your area.

Short story: after ttc for a year, I got pregnant and then miscarried March 1 of this year; we are ttc again. (I am 33). Needless to say, I have been hyper-vigilant about my cycles the past 5 months and have noticed that I ovulate around CD 17 or 18, yet get my period on CD29. My usual cycle pattern is 31 days. I checked back at my cycle records from last year and notice a similar pattern of occasionally unusually early periods. I thought that one's period should come about 14 days past ovulation and that is not happening for me -- seems to be about 11 or 12 days. While this may be within the realm of "normal", is there anything I can do naturally to help correct this short luteal phase?

I have an RE appointment (my first) at the end of August. But, of course, I do not want to wait yet another month without doing all I can on my own to help. I've read that natural progesterone cream may help (the stuff for menopausal women may benefit the luteal phase). Do you have any info or advice for what I can do to help myself?

Thank you so much for any suggestions. I would really appreciate it. It's such a lonely place, sort of floundering around for answers.

Sorry. This is beyond my realm of expertise and I should sit down and shut up. I think Dr Jacobs could give you the quick answer to your question. However, keep your appointment with the RE. More testing may be required (ie. Day 3 reproductive hormone profile and a luteal phase progesterone) to determine what's going on with your cycle.

Dr. Smith --

Well, thank you for your honesty! I thought I'd try. Dr. Jacobs unfortunately didn't seem to actually read my question and instead told me I should have my ovulation induced (which, obviously, I cannot do on my own, which is what I was asking). Vitamins? Avoiding certain foods? Standing on my head and whistling? Anyway...

I do know that my FSH was normal, my prolactin was normal, my LH was normal, my estradiol (sp?) was normal and my progesterone was 14.4 on CD23 (normal, I was told, for luteal phase) when I had all that testing done this past December. Perhaps my hormones have changed? I do know cycles do fluctuate, as does ovulation (meaning "normal" women don't ovulate occasionally).

Thanks to you for all the help and -- most importantly -- the time you take to answer all of us.

I'm still going to defer to a physician. BUT, here's what I suggest. Email your history to the RE I work with, Dr. Jane Miller (drjane@nj.rr.com) and she will advise you.

HI Dr. Smith --

Thank you so much for the reference. I will probably contact Dr. Miller later today. I really appreciate it -- any help and further info I can access not only broadens my understanding but makes me feel less anxious.
