Dr Smith,

I was just wondering what your thoughts were about DHEA... My friend, who is at a different IVF clinic to me, has been recommended to take 25mg 3 x a day of DHEA. She was told it can help egg quality. Has there been any studies on this?

I would like to try it too, as I've now had 3 cycles all ending in failure, but the internet is like a minefield when it comes to DHEA, and some sites say it shouldn't be taken without getting your levels checked first, and others say it's over hyped :-\

My husband doesn't like the idea of me taking a male sex hormone without seeking medical advice first!

I would really appreciate your thoughts :)

You are correct that the use of DHEA is controversial. The has been one published case study showing an improved ovarian response in one individual patient when stimulation was supplemented with DHEA. This effect has nor been confirmed by any other program. DHEA has not been shown to improve egg "quality", just ovarian response (i.e. number of eggs retrieved). DHEA is being hyped by a single program in NYC and is more of a marketing tool than real science at this point. Buyer beware.

I will think very carefully now before buying it, because on my last cycle I had a good response to stims, I just didn't get pregnant.
